CSPAN Sam Harris End of Faith-Religion,Terror and The Future of Reason

The End of Faith provides a harrowing glimpse of mankind’s willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs, even when these beliefs inspire the worst of human atrocities. Harris argues that in the presence of weapons of mass destruction, we can no longer expect to survive our religious differences indefinitely. Most controversially, he maintains that “moderation” in religion poses considerable dangers of its own: as the accommodation we have made to religious faith in our society now blinds us to the role that faith plays in perpetuating human conflict. While warning against the encroachment of organized religion into world politics, Harris draws on insights from neuroscience, philosophy, and Eastern mysticism in an attempt to provide a truly modern foundation for our ethics and our search for spiritual experience.

I usually stay away from the fodder that is religion. Especially when I see it here at ConCen but this guy, Sam Harris, even though I think he simplifies things too much, makes more sense than any blood thirsty bible thumping evangelist ever could and is more rational than any religious extremist ever could be. And when I say religious extremist, I mean from any religion, on any part of this globe. Not just those from the middle east.

I gotta say, I'm not trying to sell the guy's book but if you haven't seen this yet remaining too hesitant or definite and just hitting the link so you can leave a comment, put your fears aside for just 1:22:34+DL time and watch this guy! He maintains a pretty good sense of humor throughout his very serious list of topics and makes more sense than most are capable of RATIONALLY disputing. IMHO.
