Over 100 years ago, Albert Einstein stated that nothing could move faster than the speed of light. It's an absolute limit regardless of where you are and how fast you're moving. From all perspectives, from all speeds, light moves at precisely the same speed everywhere.

So when an international group of scientists called on their colleagues to help solve a puzzle, it created a sensation. The problem was that the particles they were experimenting with, neutrinos, appeared to be moving faster than the speed of light.

This wasn't a standard sensationalist attempt to obtain funding by publishing their work a la tabloid. They scoured their results for months beforehand. Now came into question whether the speed of light was constant, whether particles could momentarily jump outside of our universe to take a shortcut, and whether this was chalked up to a freak occurrence of a mathematical miscalculation missed by physicists from around the world.
