The Genius Of Britain
===========================================================================
[2010] [Channel 4] [XviD]
===========================================================================
(Just so people know, as some have taken offence, this description is not mine, neither am I condoning any "nationalistic" style values through this upload. It is merely about scientists and engineers from this area of the world.)
The "blurb":
Britain may only be a small island, but its great scientists and inventors have literally changed the modern world: from the invention of the steam engine, computers and the world-wide web to the discovery of the theory of evolution and the atom.
In this five-part series some of Britain's leading scientific figures - Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins, James Dyson, David Attenborough, Robert Winston, Paul Nurse, Jim Al-Khalili, Kathy Sykes and Olivia Judson - tell the stories of the people behind these innovations.
From Isaac Newton to Frank Whittle, James Watt to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and Joseph Banks to Rosalind Franklin, these are the people who - through blood, sweat and tears - overcame all obstacles in the search for answers.
Description:
In Channel 4's The Genius of Britain, Richard Dawkins, James Dyson, Stephen Hawking, David Attenborough and Robert Winston celebrate the great thinkers and moments in British science, from Newton to the present day. The five, who co-present each programme, are joined by Jim Al-Khalili, Kathy Sykes and Olivia Judson, among others.
Britain's great inventors and scientists have led the world and been at the forefront of some of history's greatest advances. From the steam engine to the world wide web, from the theory of evolution to the discovery of the atom, British science and ingenuity have helped shape the modern world.
The Genius of Britain tells the stories of the people behind these pivotal moments, of the men and women who overcame all obstacles in search of scientific advancement. Their tales range from accounts of pure genius, when the apple fell and the secrets of the universe were unlocked, to dark tales of obsession, deception and even body-snatching. Tackling the areas closest to their hearts and using hands-on demonstrations, the five co-presenters tell the human stories behind the scientific and engineering discoveries that we so often take for granted.
Programme 1 – Defying Gravity: The beginnings of British science.
Four men – friends, rivals and colleagues - defied everything that was known about the world at that time. Newton and his colleagues broke the mould of medieval thought and started experimenting. In doing so they discovered how the planets moved and how the human body worked. Superstition was replaced by rigorous scientific thinking and suddenly the world had microscopes, calculus and modern medicine.
Period: 17th century
Scientists/Engineers discussed: Robert Hooke, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton, Edmond Halley
Programme 2 – The Chemical Brothers: How Science Created the Industrial Revolution.
In this programme we tell the stories of the small boy who sat watching his mother’s kettle boil – and went on to create the steam engine which would herald in the industrial revolution. We’ll tell the story of the clergyman who discovered the very air we breathe – and the blacksmith’s son who discovered electricity and gave us light. These discoveries gave us the Industrial revolution and the crowds thrilled - at London’s Theatre of Science they created lightning bolts every night.
Period: 18th century
Scientists/Engineers discussed: Sir Joseph Banks, Henry Cavendish, Joseph Priestley, James Watt, John Hunter, Edward Jenner
Programme 3 – The Human Zoo: How We Came to Understand the World
The Human Zoo looks at the extraordinary stories of the explorers and naturalists who gave up years of their lives to sail the world - and when they returned they brought new worlds, new plants, new animals and the theory of evolution. But these great journeys had been prefigured also by those into the human body and we’ll look at some of history’s darker ‘collectors’ – those of human bodies.
Period: 1800 - 1865
Scientists/Engineers discussed: Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, Thomas Huxley, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Isambard Kingdom
Brunel, James Clerk Maxwell
Programme 4 – Inner Space: The 20th Century
The great discoveries of the building bocks of the universe were made by British scientists – the atom, the structure of DNA – and we’ve taken them further still and discovered how to manipulate these tiny building blocks. These are the great breakthroughs that define the modern world – from nuclear power to genetic engineering.
Period: 1900 - 1960
Scientists/Engineers discussed: Alan Turing, Frank Whittle, Robert Watson-Watt, Alexander Fleming, Paul Dirac
Programme 5 - The Outer Limits: The 21st Century
In this final programme, the stories break the ultimate boundaries. This time the voyages are into cyber space, outer space and the creation of virtual reality. There are stories of perseverance of another kind, against superstition and bureaucracy. The spirit that sent the Beagle to the South Seas is still alive and well – the quest for the truths that are out there goes on.
Period: 1950 – present day
Scientists/Engineers discussed: Fred Hoyle, Crick and Watson, Roger Penrose, Tim Berners-Lee
