Each spring the sun returns to the Antarctic sky after an absence of four months. In most places this would be a time of new growth, but above Antarctica the sun's return brings destruction in the form of ozone depletion.

The hole in the protective ozone layer means more ultraviolet rays hit the earth's surface. The effect of this onslaught on living organisms is now being gauged by experiments beneath the sea ice. The research explains why Antarctica plays such a vital role in our planets future - and our own.
